Consideration of a Resolution Designating the City's representative to the Proposed Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) School Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) Advisory Group

ISSUE: Consideration of the designation of a City representative to the proposed Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) School Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP) Advisory Group with the following criteria: The member has experience in either law enforcement, black male achievement, criminal justice reform and/or community engagement.

RECOMMENDATION: That City Council designate Christopher Lewis to the proposed ACPS SLEP Advisory Group.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the SLEP Advisory Group is to:

* Support ACPS's commitment to the safety and security of students and staff through the review of the partnership between ACPS and Alexandria Police Department (APD);

* Provide recommendations to the School Board (via the Superintendent) on innovative approaches, areas for policy changes, or enhancements to reimagine the partnership; and

* Promote communication between families, students, ACPS staff and administration, safety professionals, members of the School Board and City Council, and the community on the partnership with APD.

DISCUSSION: The composition of the proposed SLEP Advisory Group will consist of 16 members, evenly distributed between ACPS staff and Non-ACPS staff. External facilitation will be provided to promote neutrality in the process. Three subcommittees within the SLEP Advisory Group to are the (1) Research Subcommittee; (2) Communication and Community Outreach Subcommittee and (3) Memorandum of Understanding Subcommittee.
