ISSUE: Consideration of a grant application for the Commonwealth of Virginia's 2020 Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program (REPP) through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) to support the fire department in maintaining and operating emergency response plans and capabilities in order to deal with radiological incidents for the State (Regional) Hazardous Materials Team.

RECOMMENDATION: That City Council:

(1) Authorize the application of a grant for $3,500; and

(2) Authorize the City Manager to execute the necessary documents that may be required.

BACKGROUND: The Commonwealth of Virginia's 2020 Dominion Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program (REPP) through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) funds will support the Alexandria Fire Department in maintaining and operating emergency response plans and capabilities dealing with radiological incidents. Allowable expenditures include equipment, exercises and training. The grant funds are allocated over a five (5) year period not to exceed $3,500.

DISCUSSION: These funds will assist the Hazardous Materials Team in obtaining decontamination equipment for radiological incidents. This will help ensure the team has adequate equipment and training to meet the minimum capabilities to meet State and Federal standards.
