ISSUE: Council consideration of an ordinance to amend and reordain Section 12-6-2. (Composition; Appointment; Terms and Composition of Members; Filling Vacancies; Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of Chapter 6 (Commission for Women), Title 12 (Education, Social Services and Welfare) of the City Code.

RECOMMENDATION: That City Council pass the ordinance on the first reading on Tuesday October 22, and schedule it for second reading, public hearing, and final passage on Saturday, November 16.

BACKGROUND: The Commission for Women voted to request an ordinance change in order to increase its composition to include a youth representative between the ages of 16 and 24.

DISCUSSION: The Commission for Women desires a change in the composition of the Commission to include a youth representative. The proposed changes include:

(1) Increasing the membership from 15 to 16; and
(2) Adding a youth member with voting privileges.
Expanding the Commission membership to include a youth representative will provide a valuable voice and perspective to the Commission's work. Additionally, service on the Commission will offer civic engagement and leadership development opportunities for the representative.
FISCAL IMPACT: There would be no fiscal impact associated with this ordinance change.
