Consideration of Resolution in Support of the Ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by the Virginia General Assembly

ISSUE: Consideration of a resolution in support of the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by the Virginia General Assembly.
RECOMMENDATION: That City Council approve the attached resolution supporting the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by the Virginia General Assembly.
DISCUSSION: The 2019 session of the Virginia General Assembly convenes on January 9, 2019. One of the items included in the City’s approved Legislative Package is support for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution by the General Assembly during the 2019 session.
In addition, the Alexandria Commission on Women has expressed its support for the same, submitting the attached resolution for consideration by Council. The proposed resolution calls on the Virginia General Assembly to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment during the 2019 legislative session and urges the members of the Alexandria delegation of the Virginia General Assembly to support legislation to address the core issues of gender inequality
