MEMORANDUM

TO: THE HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF CITY COUNCIL
FROM: MARK B. JINKS, CITY MANAGER /s/
DOCKET TITLE:
TITLE
Resolution Calling for Common-Sense Gun Laws. [ROLL-CALL VOTE]
BODY
_________________________________________________________________
ISSUE: Risk to Public Safety.
RECOMMENDATION: Adopt the attached resolution calling for elected Federal and State representatives to swiftly enact common-sense gun laws.
BACKGROUND: Gun violence and the need for much stricter gun laws and regulations has been a longstanding issue in Virginia and in the United States. The recent murder of 17 high school students and teachers in Parkland, Florida is another tragic reminder of the failure of Federal and State elected bodies to enact effective gun control measures. Given the recent Florida event and ensuing reignition of the national debate, the attached resolution has been prepared for City Council consideration.
This resolution is broadly consistent with prior actions by City Council seeking reasonable, common sense gun control measures. It should be noted that local governments in Virginia are precluded by Virginia law from enacting local gun control measures.
