ISSUEAlexandria Police Department 21st Century Policing Plan.

RECOMMENDATION:  That City Council receive the Alexandria Police Department 21st Century Policing Plan.

BACKGROUND:  As part of its commitment to examine and implement the recommendations of the 21st Century Policing initiative, the Alexandria Police Department reviewed its goals and objectives, obtained community input and examined best practices in law enforcement.  As a result of this review, the Department has produced a 21st Century Policing Plan which will serve as a guiding document for the agency.

DISCUSSION:  The plan examines each of the recommendations found in the final report of former President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.  The Department identified areas where they were already implementing recommendations, areas where they were working towards meeting the recommendations and areas that had yet to be addressed.  The plan also seeks to apply the recommendations to existing Police Department programs and to make adjustments to those programs or create new ones where needed.

FISCAL IMPACT:  None - implementation to be accomplished with existing resources
