ISSUE: Consideration of a Resolution in support of the City of Orlando, Florida.
RECOMMENDATION: That City Council adopt the attached resolution (Attachment) adopted by the Alexandria Human Rights Commission.
DISCUSSION: On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, the Alexandria Human Rights Commission passed unanimously a resolution in support of the City of Orlando, Florida, where on June 12, 2016, a gunman opened fire in the Pulse nightclub, killing 49 before being shot and killed himself by police. Members of the Latino, LGBTQ and Muslim communities in Orlando have been particularly impacted by the massacre and its aftermath, and all Americans have been affected by the tragedy. Members of the Alexandria Human Rights Commission believe that hatred and violence perpetrated against any Americans, wherever committed, threaten our own peace, safety and community, and ask City Council to adopt this expression of solidarity with and support for the City of Orlando, a city with which Alexandria shares many attributes.
FISCAL IMPACT: None.
