ISSUE: City Council consideration of the City Council Naming Committee's recommendation on the proposal to name the location of the Del Ray Farmer’s Market the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square in honor of Pat Miller.
RECOMMENDATION: That Council hold a public hearing on December 12 and adopt the Naming Committee's recommendation and proposal to name the location of the Del Ray Farmer’s Market the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square in honor of Pat Miller.
DISCUSSION: Pat Miller is a long-time community activist in the City of Alexandria and has influenced the redevelopment of the Del Ray neighborhood into a vibrant and energized neighborhood for over twenty-five years. Through Pat’s efforts and talent, Del Ray’s commercial corridor along Mount Vernon Avenue has been transformed in less than two decades from a non-descript retail area into one of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area’s most popular destinations, replete with restaurants, boutiques and shops worthy of recurring Presidential visits. Through Pat’s interest and guidance, the addition of the Farmer’s Market, art and history amenities and annual special events activities, such as “Art on the Avenue,” support Del Ray’s economic vitality and encourage both Alexandria residents and visitors to explore and enjoy this unusual neighborhood. Pat’s commitment to Alexandria has earned her an impressive list of awards and honors that demonstrate her commitment to the community, and her tireless dedication to improving the quality of life in the city.
A proposal to name the location of the Del Ray Farmer’s Market the “Pat Miller Neighborhood Square” was communicated to the City Council Naming Committee (Councilwoman Pepper, Mayor Euille and City Manager Representative Lance Mallamo) and the Committee considered this request at its meeting on November 24, 2015.
