ISSUE: Public Hearing on the Alexandria Children and Youth Master Plan from the Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission.
RECOMMENDATION: That City Council upon conclusion of the Public Hearing that City Council schedule the Alexandria Children and Youth Master Plan for final passage on Tuesday, June 10, 2014.
BACKGROUND: The Alexandria City Council, in conjunction with the Alexandria City Public Schools, created the Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission in 2011. The Commission was established to promote the coordination, alignment and effectiveness of services provided to children, youth and their families by the City, the Alexandria City Public Schools, and community organizations. The creation of the Commission represented a paradigm shift from an age-based focus to a more holistic, outcome focused approach for its programs and services. The City Council charged the Commission with the development of the City's first Children and Youth Master Plan to guide this alignment and encourage greater collaboration.
The members of City Council formally received the plan at their Legislative Meeting on April 22, 2014, and scheduled it for Public Hearing on May 17, 2014. The Alexandria City Public School Board received the Plan on May 3, 2014. A Joint Work Session of the City Council and School Board is scheduled for May 28, 2014.
