ISSUE:  Consideration of a resolution of City Council’s intent to appropriate funding to Alexandria City Public Schools by major classification beginning in FY 2028.

RECOMMENDATION:  That City Council adopt the attached resolution (Attachment 1).

BACKGROUND:  Code of Virginia § 22.1-94 authorizes governing bodies to make appropriations to a school board for operation, capital outlay, and debt service in the public schools.  The amount appropriated by the governing body for public schools shall relate to its total only or to such major classifications prescribed by the Board of Education pursuant to Code of Virginia § 22.1-115.

DISCUSSION:  This resolution directs Alexandria City Public Schools to submit for FY 2028 an estimate of the amount of money deemed to be needed during FY 2028 for the support of the public schools for each major classification.

FISCAL IMPACT:  While City Council intends to appropriate funds for the public schools by the major classifications, this action does not dictate the amount to be appropriated.
