Consideration of Acceptance of a Funding Allocation from the 2014 Local Emergency Management Program Grant in the Amount of $60,904.43 for the City's Emergency Management Program.

ISSUE: City Council consideration of accepting funds in the amount of $60,904.43 available to the City for a period ending June 30, 2015, from the United States Department of Homeland Security through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. These funds provide operational funds for the City's Office of Emergency Management.

RECOMMENDATION:

(1) Authorize the City Manager to accept the funding through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management in the amount of $60,904.43; and

(2) Authorize the City Manager to execute all the necessary documents that may be required.

BACKGROUND: The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provides annual Emergency Management Performance Grants to the states for distribution to local governments in support of emergency management program activities such as planning, training, exercises, situational awareness, and capability reporting.

DISCUSSION: Alexandria was notified on June 6, 2014 by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management that the City is eligible to receive a total of $60,904.43, to support our comprehensive emergency management program. The 2014 grant period ends on June 30, 2014.

Each year the Commonwealth establishes required work elements that the local government must meet to receive this funding. The work elements required this year are attached. This funding requires the City to match the grant amount by expending at least the same amount of general funds on our emergency management program. Ale...
