ISSUE: Consideration of an ordinance to establish First Baptist Church of Alexandria as a temporary replacement for the Chinquapin Recreation Center polling place for the June 11 and November 5, 2013 Elections.

RECOMMENDATION: That City Council pass on first reading and set for public hearing, second reading and final passage on February 23, 2013, an ordinance to establish First Baptist Church of Alexandria as a temporary replacement for the Chinquapin Recreation Center polling place for the June 11 and November 5, 2013 Elections.

BACKGROUND: The Alexandria Electoral Board, which is comprised of three bipartisan members who are appointed by the Alexandria Circuit Court for staggered three year terms, is responsible for making recommendations to City Council concerning changes in precinct boundaries and for establishing new precincts. City Council has the authority to make the recommended changes. The Electoral Board is required to provide polling places that are accessible to all voters and the Board continually strives to provide voters with the most accessible facilities that will provide the most suitable space for voting.

DISCUSSION: The Chinquapin Recreation Center will not be available as a polling place for the June 11 and November 5, 2013 Elections because this facility will be closed for at least five months due to HVAC renovations beginning May 6, 2013.
