TITLE

Public Hearing, Second Reading and Final Passage of an Ordinance to Amend and Reordain Section 2-4-80 (Creation, Composition and Organization) of Article 1 (Alexandria Archaeological Commission) of Chapter 4 (Committees, Boards, and Commissions) of Title 2 (General Government), of the Code of the City of Alexandria, Virginia, 1981, as amended.

BODY

_______________________________________________________________

ISSUE: Consideration of an ordinance to amend the composition of the Alexandria Archaeological Commission from one member from the “Alexandria Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors” to “Visit Alexandria Board of Governors or a representative of the tourism community.”

RECOMMENDATION: That City Council consider the proposed ordinance (Attachment 2) on first reading and schedule it for second reading, public hearing and final passage on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

BACKGROUND: The Alexandria Archaeology Commission was established in 1975 and reauthorized by Ordinance No. 3773 in 1995 by Alexandria City Council as a citizen advisory board to Alexandria’s Mayor and City Council on matters dealing with archaeological and historical resources located in the City of Alexandria. The Alexandria Archaeological Commission was the first such commission established in the United States. It is charged with advising on and setting policy and direction for archaeology in the City.

DISCUSSION: The proposed ordinance changes the requirement that one member of the Archaeology Commission come from the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Directors to provide that the member may instead come from the Visit Alexandria Board of Governors or a representative of the tourism community. This will broaden the pool of potential volunteers who may serve on the Commission, while maintaining the original intent to have representation on the committee from the tourism sector.

FISCAL IMPACT: There will be no expected fiscal impact to these proposed changes.
