Consideration of an Application for the 2025 Inova Community Health Opportunities Grant

BODY

ISSUE: Should the Alexandria Fire Department apply for a 2025 Inova Community Health Opportunities Grant?

RECOMMENDATION: That City Council:

1)                     Approve the competitive 2025 Inova Community Health Opportunities grant application for funding up to $89,390.

2)                     Authorize the City Manager to execute the necessary documents that may be required.

BACKGROUND: Inova is a nonprofit healthcare provider in the Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Inova offers an annual competitive grant opportunity for eligible organizations to improve care for communities with unmet health needs.

DISCUSSION: In collaboration with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA), the Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) will purchase network-connected automatic external defibrillator (AED) devices and strategically deploy the equipment to ARHA properties. The City already has AED devices in many City facilities such as libraries and recreation centers. The project will focus on ARHA properties that contain ten or more residential units. The devices will provide ARHA residents with a simple and automated method to deliver lifesaving treatment during cardiac arrest incidents, until emergency medical services arrive.

Grant award announcements are expected on June 2, 2025. Funding disbursements are expected on August 1, 2025. Grant funding must be spent by July 31, 2026.

FISCAL IMPACT: There is no match required and this one-time funding will be used to purchase equipment and support services.
